Just Stringing You Along From Stringers to Strings.

Image
I haven't posted in a while and a few people have been wondering what is up. This summer Myles and I have been fishing a bit and he has been using his Mom's sit on top Kayak.  I decided it was time to go ahead and build him one of his own after all he is starting to get too big to sit and just ride along.  First I looked at  Yostwerks .  I highly recommend Tom's boats.  I built a Sea Tour about 10 years ago I'm building a Canvas Back Kayak.  Here are the plans  for those interested.  This came from an old  Mechanix Illustrated  magazine. My brother ran across someone selling a pile of already cut out kayaks a few years back and he assembled one but has had limited success with his canvas skin.  We took it out this summer and it is far more stable than my kayak, a plus for a young child in my eyes.  After about 30 minutes, the water started soaking through the canvas in my brother's kayak and we came back.  I'll do a clear vinyl skin on the one

First Snow of 2016 with 46mph wind gusts.

Image
Yesterday we got some wicked wind and our fist snow fall of the season.  With winds blowing at about 46 mph I thought I'd go down and check on Kraken.  The cover system is holding up pretty well and with all the other bigger boats around mine the brunt of the wind is being blocked.  A good deal in all.  Still it is  amazing how fast we go from 70 degree days to the 30's overnight.  Maybe will be ice boating this year before Christmas!  That would be great. Here a quick video of the conditions.

2016 Out for the season.

Tower Marine pulled Kraken for me mid-September this year and it has been raining ever since.  Sunday after it stopped raining I got down and pulled all the sails and cushions for the winter.   I have to get down and do a little more cleaning and pull the motor this weekend.  I'm hoping to get the cabin squeaky clean so when spring rolls around I'm ready for a early launch again this year.  This year I'm planning on leaving the mast up and tarping off over the boom and spinnaker pole hopefully giving my self a bit more pitch so the snow slides off as they are predicting a rough winter for us. It all fits in the back of a Ford focus. Sun setting on the end of a great season. Drying stuff out in the garage. A quick end of season cleaning before stashing the cushions under the guest bead for the winter helps.  It is amazing the condition of these cushions after 38 years they still look new with a little Armor All.

Cape Dory Typhoon Genoa Project

Image
Today, I started sewing up a new Genoa for Kraken .  This summer, I patched and taped the old Genoa several times.  It is ripping down the luff seam, the foot seam and it is pretty thin in several other spots so it is well past time for the old sail to be retired.  I believe the Genoa may have come with the boat in 1978.  Happy birthday to me and the boat; at 38 years, we are the same age.   This is my second sailrite sail. A few years ago, I built a working jib. Here's a link to that project.  The previous owner built a main and a storm.  So this will fill out the sail inventory with all sailrite sails.   Over the last few weeks I've been working on getting a sewing machine fixed and tuned up.  It has been interesting as I have pulled apart and checked the timing on my machine. I even made a few modifications to beef it up a bit and allow for some extra clearance at the base plate.  Friday the kit from sailrite arrived! This was super fast I did not expect it to even

Primer and Putty Half Hull #4

Some quick photos of the first coat of primer and a little more putty to smooth out the rough spots.

Half Hull #3

This is what it looks like outside here today.  Brr.   I stopped down and checked on Kraken Friday she remains warm and cozy under her tarp.  So with weather like this it's back to the half hull.  Here are a few photos of the progress. Hull lay up. Hull fairing.   Top view.  Cut out and deck glued on and cabin top placed.  This is about it for now.  I have a bit more faring to do on the hull before I paint it up and mount it.

Quack Quack

We finally did it we got out for a ride on the Duck Boat in Saugatuck .  This has been on our bucket list for a while.  We have seen the Duck boat many times.  Sometimes we are pretty sure we are part of the tour other times we are more than sure we are part of the tour.  I'm sure the jokes are different each time.  It was a cheery fun trip out and around the bay and ride through the town.   Anyway I know it's not sailing but this thing is just cool.  If you get a chance to go on one don't miss it.  Video in....  SpLaSh! Video Out....  ThUnK. With out us out on the lake this was the loan sailboat.  A Kayak sailor  not nearly as nice looking are our Typhoon.  Well hope this nice weather holds we are heading out sailing tomorrow.

A quick sewing project

Image
One little thing that bothers me is finding water in my winches after it rains.  I decided it was high time I sewed up some winch covers.  This little project took very little time once I sat down and got it started.  The tape measure made several trips back and forth to the marina in the bottom of the cooler before I used it to measure the winches.   The winch is three and a quarter inches tall so I started by making the sides up.  This gets sewed to the round top piece. Turns out a Bush's bean can is the perfect circumference.  I put the cover on the can to pin up so I'd get a nice tight finish. Completed i turned it right side out and it looks like this is finished. I left the elastic extra long to tie under the winch mounting brackets. There we are. Nice, cozy and dry winches tucked in under their covers. The long elastic ties under so the wind does not take them away.
