Typhoon Half Hull #6

The Teak trim is one of the things that really sets the Cape Dory Typhoon apart from other boats and I just couldn't leave it off the model.  Last night, I stayed up late and got another coat on the blue bottom paint.  This morning, I glued on some of the details.  This is coming out way better than I thought it would.  I want to get the light blue on the deck.  Then get it mounted up on the oak board (you can see in the background).  I really had to stop myself when building this from putting in the cockpit, tiller, cleats. and winches.   I guess I could always go back and add those things later but this is looking really sharp as is.

Another wintry day here in Michigan = Snow Day = Summer make up days.  We have officially passed the number of snow days allowed here in Michigan so I will be going into summer.  Oh well, may as well work on the half hull right?  Today I worked on making teak trim, got the water line on, as well as a first coat of bottom paint blue.  I also glued on a bow plate.  It has a ways to go still but it is definitely taking shape.

This is what it looks like outside here today.  Brr.   I stopped down and checked on Kraken Friday she remains warm and cozy under her tarp.  So with weather like this it's back to the half hull.  Here are a few photos of the progress. Hull lay up. Hull fairing.   Top view.  Cut out and deck glued on and cabin top placed.  This is about it for now.  I have a bit more faring to do on the hull before I paint it up and mount it.

Just some quick photos of the half hull project.  The next step will be to start skinning the project.  I am building it on a piece of balsa and plan to transfer the it to a finished piece of oak later.

Typhoon Half Hull and Dumas Pond Yachts

So I have decided to start the half hull project.  The boom tent is still in the back of my head.  I just keep thinking I will need to get on and off the boat to take a few more measurements as I sew that up and with it under the winter cover that could be tricky. In the mean time the half hull is a good thing to play with troughout the on coming winter months.  ... Wonder if winter will ever get here it's looking like a green Christmas. Here I am starting to lay out the chines.  The line drawings came from Todd Dunn link here .  Upon getting all the chines laid out I scored them all out with a utility knife and razor blade. I used my dremel to rough cut out the chines and I'll go back with a sanding bit to form them up later.   Myles needed something to do so we decided to pull apart my old Dumas Gee Gee sailing sloop.  This is an old pond yacht. My uncle and I built when I was a kid.  My brothers and I spent many summers swimming across la

I know it has been a while since I've posted.  Just checking in before Christmas.  I stopped down and checked out the boat today.  Cover is still on and things are looking good inside and out.  A few people have asked about the boom tent project.  I took a look at it but have not started it yet.  It has been pretty crazy at work so it is on the back burner for now.  I'm hopping to get the material and get started in January.  Well that or the half hull project will get started in January just depends on my mood I guess.  That's about it for now, back to finishing up that Christmas shopping.  Merry Christmas to all you reading.  I'll likely not blog again until after Christmas unless I get out on the ice boat.   Here's a tip if you are looking for something for your lady check out.  My wife's shop Third Coast Soaps: hand crafted, nut free soaps and body butters:  http://tinyurl.com/kxrl6o4 Her stuff is super good just don't try eating it like this gu
