Over Coming Seasonal Set Backs

So last weekend I headed down to put a coat of bottom paint on Kraken.  I knew I did not have enough paint to finish the job and figured I'd stop for lunch and pick up a quart on the way back.  After searching West Marine's shelves and finding nothing, I got some help and found out the nearest quart was in Washington.  They would have to order it in for me.  Kraken sat for the week with three quarters of the bottom painted. It looked kinda silly.

This weekend, I am on a winning streak,  just like the Detroit Tigers.  I picked up the paint this morning and even made it into Randy's West Shore Boat Repairs.  Randy's shop is tucked away I the back side of Douglas. It is a friendly place.  It also happens to be one of the only places I know that carries the spark plug I need for my Mercury 2.5hp in stock.  I've also dealt with him a few other times when rebuilding my British Sea Gull.  An over all great place to get weird parts and pieces.  I found out today they also work on tractors in the off season.  We had a great chat about a tractor baseball.  Yeah you read that right tractor baseball.  My uncle plays antique tractor baseball and I was telling them about it.

Back to Tower Marine I found the boat yard was a-buzz with activity.  The owner of the boat next to me and his dad were busily removing the prop and cutlass bearing from his Pearson 30.  I had to do a double take on that one because they had already removed the rudder.  Pearsons have a very distinctive rudder design that swoops forward. Electric cords were spread across the ground and ladders where clanking around the yard.  Power buffers buzzed on and off.

I got right to work.  The water in the yard had been turned on so I started by washing the grunge and grime off the hull.  Then went to work cleaning and waxing.  The boat came out pretty well I had a tough time getting all the grime off the boot stripe this year so I'll have to work on that more later.  Next I finished up the bottom paint and touched up the areas that got messed up when I washed the upper portion of the hull.

I finished of the day by installing he new interior compass mount.  I picked this up at Wolf Marine's swap meet last fall.  This new compass will probably spend most of its time down in the cabin protected from the suns rays the old compass will be on a shelf at the house just in case I drop this new one over board.  I still can't believe my luck finding this exact compass and bracket. This may actually be the start of a future navigation station now that I think about it.

Other tasks today included installing the new chaffing guards on the side stays.  

Spring is here and I'm so ready to get on the water.

    So I'm a bit confused on your bottom paint. It looks like an ablative but you're in freshwater up there. Do you overcoat it every year? I've only a bit of sanding left and before painting am going to spend some time on the phone with a couple of manufacturers about the best hard paint for a fresh water vessel. Sounds like Spring has arrived up there!

    Ok so I just have to ask the reason that compass is hanging inside the cuddy? Do you have another position for it in the cockpit where it will get quite a bit of use?

Spinnaker Socks are super nice for launching and recovering your spinnaker.  My last two boats have had them and after using one the benefits are clear. 1st off, sail handling is much easier especially if you're short-handed. 2nd, safety spinnaker socks let you launch and recover your spinnaker without everything being perfectly packed in a turtle bag another word fewer things to tangle up keeps it safer. Woodstock does not have one so we have not used the Spinnaker yet and our trip to Lake Mac last week would have been the ideal time to use a Spinnaker.  So it is time to look into this.  $17.00 per foot x 28 ft =$476 plus tax.  Hum lets go see what's in the garage.  Any past readers remember this old post Boom Tent   Well this is one sewing project that didn't work out. However, I still have the material sitting here on a shelf and it is light enough and long enough to make into a sock. Main sail rigging

This post is a quick reference for rigging the main sail of a Cape Dory Typhoon.  Each boat over time has different modifications made to it based on the skippers preferences so your boat may not be exactly like this one.  However this is how I put mine together. I   first start with tuning the mast in.  I like to have a bit of rake in the mast and to be sure that it is in column.   Next I slide the booms goose neck into the mast. I slide the boom down to the sail stop and make sure it is tight with a screw driver. Then I clip the back side of the boom to the back stay catch. After that I get to work on untwisting the main sheet.   My current main sheet set up goes something like this.  It is a bit of a variation from the original set up.  You can see I still use one of the original Schafer stand up blocks to guide the sheet line to the cam cleat but the Harken fiddle block does most of the heavy lifting here.  Later this season I'm hopping to switch this system out for a traveler.

A removable compression post

So this season I have been gearing up and changing my rigging around bit by bit as I find pieces here and there.  My ultimate goal is to  rig up a mast top spinnaker for use later in the season.  So far, I've got the mast head halyard set up.  Today I took the next step and installed a removable compression post.  My Typhoon has the saddle supports that came with older Cape Dorys but I thought it best to add a bit of extra support before trying out the mast head spinnaker. So here is what you will need:  A nice piece of teak, two other (less nice) hardwood boards for underneath the floor cut to 4 1/2 inches,  epoxy, 3M permanent mounting tape and a master lock adjustable door jam.. I routered the teak to give it a soft edge for when I bang my head into it.   Nice board ready to install. Setting the Teak upper. I drilled holes in the back of the teak plate to match the mast step through bolts.  I did not remove the mast step and put extended bolts on.  I wanted a smoot
